What Are Foot Orthotics?
A foot orthotic is a device that can be discretely inserted into the shoe to support, align, prevent and/or accommodate foot abnormalities and improve how the foot functions. |
What Do They Do?
As an interface between the foot and the shoe, a foot orthotic can be effective in helping to treat a number of foot and lower limb problems including:
- Heel pain
- Arch pain
- Forefoot pain
- Shin splint
- Knee pain
Foot orthotics can also help address foot and lower limb pain and complications related to health conditions such as diabetes and arthritis.
Your feet are the foundation of your body. |
Just as eyeglasses help correct eyesight foot orthotics do the same for the feet.
|
Are There Different Types?
They are available in a selection of hardness and thickness to suit any application.
Thicker orthotics fit shoes with removable insert like casual and athletic shoes.
Thinner orthotics are made to fit dress shoes
Discuss your preferences with your pedorthist. |
|
Do I Need Orthotics?
There are signs of biomechanical malfunctions that would require foot orthotics. To name some:
- A burning sensation under your feet
- Corns and calluses
- Deformed toes
- Problems finding comfortable-fitting shoes
- Back pain
- Frequent ankle sprains
- Bunions
We recommend that you consult your physician first. Sometimes a foot pain can be addressed using other methods. How Do I Choose A Pedorthic Clinic?
Visit a Canadian Certified Pedorthist in a clinic that has lab on-site.
There is a real connection when the person assessing the patient is making the orthotics. |
|
PODOCANADA ON-SITE LAB
Fabrication and adjustments are done on-site providing the client with greater convenience and better service.
How Long Do They Last?
With proper care they should last two years. Some rigid orthotics are made to last longer
|
Who Covers The Cost Of Orthotics?
Most private insurance companies cover all or part of the cost of foot orthotics. Some public insurance as well.
Even though they are not covered under OHIP, the cost of your orthotics may be eligible for inclusion in your income tax reports.
